A major supplier of crushed stone and environmental products plans to invest $450 million in South Carolina, adding 70 jobs through new and expanded quarry sites in six counties.

Virginia-based Luck Cos. will develop new sites in Chester, Edgefield, Saluda and Spartanburg counties while expanding existing operations in Fairfield and Kershaw counties. The company operates through three divisions: Luck Stone, Luck Ecosystems and Luck Real Estate Ventures.

“Our growth strategy is about expanding the reach of our people-focused mission,” said Joe Carnahan, chief growth officer at Luck Cos. “We believe in creating opportunities for our associates and for those in the community. Our goal is to have a positive impact across the new communities we’re joining.”

The largest investment will be in Spartanburg County, where $132 million will fund a new site in Enoree over the next 20 years. The project will create 25 jobs and include opportunities for commercial development.

Chester County will see $93 million invested in a quarry site that will include acreage for agricultural education and economic development. The project also will add 25 jobs.

Along the Interstate 20 corridor, the company will invest $70 million in a 434-acre Edgefield County site over 20 years, creating 10 jobs. In Saluda County, a $40 million investment over the next decade will establish a 330-acre site and create another 10 jobs.

The company’s existing operations in Fairfield and Kershaw counties, which currently employ more than 30 people, also will expand. The Fairfield site near Highway 34 will receive $90 million to support the growing Interstate 77 corridor. In Kershaw, west of Highway 601, the company will invest $25 million in a permanent plant to produce materials for road construction and coastal protection.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster praised the investment as evidence of the state’s economic strength.

“Luck Companies’ decision to expand throughout the state showcases the opportunity and success that can be found in every corner of South Carolina,” McMaster said. “We celebrate their ongoing investment, job creation and the impact the company continues to make in communities across our state.”

Founded in 1923, Luck Cos. serves construction, civil engineering and environmental industries. The company plans to begin hiring for the new positions immediately.
