An information display has been developed that lets a driver monitor vehicle performance and trip information on a small screen built into his truck’s dashboard.

The vehicle information profiler system is the collaborative brainchild of Planar Systems of Beaverton, Ore., and Mack Trucks of Allentown, Pa. It is wired into the vehicle’s electronic systems and sensors, diagnosing any problems that may arise during a trip.

The profiler has been solely developed for Mack Trucks, and will be integrated into the truck maker’s new Vision line of tractors.

“We expect the (vehicle information profiler) to set the standard for driver ergonomics and functionality in the Class 8 market,” said Wayne Wissinger, a marketing manager with Mack.

A driver uses a set of buttons below the display screen to navigate through the profiler system and view data contained in one of more than 60 information screens. Among other tasks, the system can be used to reprogram a truck’s idle speed, reset a trip, identify a new driver or determine when the next oil change is due.

Planar said the display also can be customized to the driving habits and information needs of an individual trucker.

To prevent distraction while en route, drivers have access to only essential information while the vehicle is moving. Once stopped, full access is granted.

Planar said the profiler’s electroluminescent display makes the screen readable under different types of light, including direct sunlight. The company adds that the display is similar to those used in tanks and other military vehicles.

Mack demonstrated the system at The Maintenance Council’s conference held in mid-March. It planned to show off the device later in the month at the Mid-America Trucking Show.
