Manufacturing activity in the New York region increased in September, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said Sept.15.

The “Empire State Index,” generally the first economic indicator in a given month, jumped to a 27.5 reading, the highest since October 2009, from 14.69 in August, the regional Fed said.

Economists had called for a reading of 15.95 in September, Bloomberg News reported. Readings greater than zero show expansion.

Manufacturing is one of trucking’s largest and most important customers.
