Maverick Transportation is raising pay for drivers in its temperature-control division and for student drivers after six months on the job as part of an effort to attract and retain more experienced drivers.

“At average mileage levels, this pay change will increase pay $4,000 a year,” said Kim Williams, executive vice president of Maverick, a flatbed and refrigerated truckload carrier based in North Little Rock, Arkansas. “That’s a significant increase — and we’re glad to do it because we appreciate all they do.”

Effective Oct. 2, experienced drivers will be paid between 46 cents and 50 cents a mile, plus up to 6 cents a mile for a performance bonus. The rate for student drivers is 40 cents a mile.

Maverick USA operates more than 1,600 tractors and ranks No. 74 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
