Mayors Reach Out to Trump Administration for January Event
The U.S. Conference of Mayors have invited top-level Trump administration officials to address their group at their January meeting in Washington.
The announcement came shortly after the group’s leaders met with President-elect Donald Trump at his New York headquarters last week. The meeting focused on infrastructure funding. Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett (R), the group’s president, was among the mayors to meet with Trump.
“We had a very positive, wide-ranging discussion with President-elect Trump,” Cornett said, in a statement the group issued Dec. 16. “We appreciate his strong desire to work with the nation’s mayors on shared priorities that can strengthen America’s metro economies.”
Cities and metropolitan regions have ramped up funding initiatives for infrastructure projects. Local leaders, such as Cornett, have touted the potential benefits of relying on public-private ventures to help pay for new roads and bridges absent robust federal support.
The Trump team has not indicated who would be tapped to address the group of mayors. During the campaign, Trump proposed providing $137 billion in tax credits for investors to incentivize a $1 trillion investment in infrastructure over 10 years.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 85th Winter Meeting is scheduled for Jan. 17-19.
