Senate Republicans on Nov. 13 unanimously elected Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to become the chamber’s leader of the majority.

As Senate leader, the Kentucky Republican will be the main floor time manager in the 114th Congress for legislation pertaining to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and key highway funding bills.

McConnell also would be his party’s top negotiator on transportation issues related to FMCSA and other agencies during the Obama administration’s final two years. The next Congress convenes in January.

In the November midterm elections, McConnell pulled away from Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes to win a sixth term in the chamber.
