Memorial Day Travel to Rise 5.4%, AAA Says

The motorist group AAA said that travel over the Memorial Day weekend will jump 5.4% from a year ago as an improved economy prompts more Americans to hit the road, Reuters reported.

About 32.1 million travelers will take a trip away from home during the holiday weekend this year, up from 30.5 million last year, AAA said.

Some 28 million people will drive to their destinations, up 5.8% from a year ago, Reuters reported, citing AAA.

Gasoline prices are just under $2.80 a gallon and about 35 cents higher than a year ago, while diesel is running just over $3 and is about 75 cents higher than last year, according to the latest Department of Energy weekly survey.
