Mueller Inc. is scrapping its medium- and heavy-duty trucks and signing a deal with Ryder System Inc. to lease 26 vehicles.

The company manufactures metal buildings and metal roofing and has had its own fleet since the 1930s, but felt it would cost too much time to keep up with all the problems, the company said.

Mueller had approximately 90 Freightliner, International, Volvo and Mack trucks in the fleet that transported products between locations and to customers.

“We had always purchased all of our trucks outright. We began searching for a solution to maintenance and repair costs. With 35 five locations we found it difficult to easily maintain accurate records and control costs,” said Mueller Chief Financial Officer Phillip Arp. “We found that cycling our trucks with Ryder providing all of the data we could ever need regarding fleet maintenance, and operating efficiencies would reduce cost and allow us focus more on our core objectives.”

He added that given the current regulatory environment, the decision will also help them meet and exceed the requirements for compliance.

Ryder ranks No. 13 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
