Rick Snyder, Michigan’s newly elected governor, has announced his support for a second bridge linking Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
Snyder also forged an agreement with the federal government allowing the state to get matching highway funds for the $550 million Canada is giving the state to pay for Michigan’s share of the bridge construction.
The federal funds are to be spent on other job-creating highway projects, Snyder said.
His backing sets up a potential clash with fellow Republicans, who last year rejected a bill that would allow Michigan to enter into a public-
private partnership to get a new bridge built.
Matty Moroun, who owns the existing Ambassador Bridge that connects Detroit and Windsor, opposes efforts to build a new publicly owned crossing.
