Minn. DOT Testing Cameras to Monitor for Truck Parking Spots

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has said it will test using cameras to help truck drivers find available parking slots.

Cameras will be activated from January through April at an Interstate 94 rest area near Minneapolis, the department said.

After initial tests, the system will notify truck drivers and freight carriers of available spaces via a website, in-cab messaging and changeable signs along I-94.

“Real-time information about the availability of space is critical to truckers who need to determine if they should pull off at the current stop or continue to the next location,” said John Tompkins, MnDOT’s freight project manager.

“The information could help drivers make trip decisions that will improve their safety and the safety of all motorists,” he said in a statement.
