The American Moving & Storage Association has applied for an exemption for its 3,700 member companies from federal regulations preventing motor carriers from driving following the 14th hour after coming on duty.

The exemption would enable drivers to leave a residential area to the nearest place offering safety and security for overnight parking after using their maximum 14-hour work day but still in the process of delivering household goods shipments.

“In no case would the drivers be permitted to drive more than 75 miles or 90 minutes after the 14th hour,” the association said in a statement.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has requested public comment through Oct. 9 on AMSA’s application for the exemption.
