Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico increased 6.5% in December, the Department of Transportation announced.

All trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners rose 6.4% to $90 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said Feb. 27 in its monthly report.

Freight carried by trucks, vessel and pipeline increased, and rail and air trade declined. Trucks carried 57.9% of the freight by value among the Nafta nations, BTS said.

Freight moved by rail, which was 14.9% of the total Nafta trade, declined 2.3% year-over-year, BTS said.

Truck imports to the United States from the two countries increased 8.6% to $25.3 billion, and exports grew 5.9% to $26.3 billion.
