Nafta Surface Trade Grows 6.8%
Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico grew 6.8% in July from the same month last year and fell 1.4% from June, the Department of Transportation reported.
Trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners fell to $87.6 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said Sept. 27 in its monthly report.
Trucks carried 59.2% of the total value of the freight traded among the Nafta partners.
Trucks accounted for 53.9% of the $49.9 billion in trade with Canada and 65.3% of the $43.2 billion traded with Mexico.
Freight moved by rail, which accounted for 14.6% of total trade, increased 4.5% year-over-year, BTS said.
Truck imports to the United States from the two countries grew 4.7% year-over-year to $26.2 billion, while exports increased 5.8% to $28.9 billion.
Rail imports rose 6.4% to $8.7 billion, while exports grew 1.2% to $4.9 billion. Pipeline imports increased 18.6% to $6.5 billion, while exports lept 71.4% to $1.3 billion.
