Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico rose 17.4% in February from a year ago, the Department of Transportation said.

Trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners rose to $78.1 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Trade Statistics said in its monthly report.

Month-to-month trade, which is affected by seasonal factors, increased 3.4% from January, BTS said.

U.S.-Canada trade rose 13.7% to $45.4 billion, while U.S.-Mexico trade improved 23% to $32.7 billion.

Truck imports to the United States climbed 16.9% year-over-year to $26.1 billion. Exports rose 16.8% to $27.5 billion.

Rail imports rose 19.5% to $8.7 billion, while exports jumped 26.7% to $4.8 billion. Pipeline imports increased 8.6% to $6 billion while exports jumped 60.7% to $1.1 billion.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90% of U.S. trade among NAFTA partners moves by land.
