Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico grew 2.5% in August from the same month last year, the Department of Transportation reported.
Trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners rose to $96.5 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said Nov. 7 in its monthly report.
Trucks carried 59.9% of the total value of the freight traded among the Nafta partners.
Trucks accounted for 54.6% of the $53.4 billion in trade with Canada and 66.3% of the $43.2 billion traded with Mexico.
Freight moved by rail, which accounted for 15.6% of total trade, increased 3% year-over-year, BTS said.
Truck imports to the United States from the two countries were unchanged year-over-year at $27.5 billion, and exports increased 1.4% to $30.3 billion.
Rail imports rose 6.7% to $9.8 billion, and exports declined 3.3% to $5.2 billion. Pipeline imports increased 14.5% to $6.2 billion, and exports increased 50.2% to $950 million.
