NAFTA Surface Trade Rises 2.6%
Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico was 2.6% higher in August than the same month last year, the Department of Transportation reported.
Trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners rose to $82.5 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Trade Statistics said in its monthly report.
Month-to-month trade, which is affected by seasonal factors, jumped 9% from July, BTS said.
U.S.-Canada trade declined 1% to $47 billion due to lower U.S. imports, while U.S.-Mexico trade rose 7.8% to $35.5 billion.
Truck imports to the United States from the two countries rose 2.9% year-over-year to $27.5 billion, while exports rose 2% to $29.9 billion.
Rail imports jumped 16.3% to $9.2 billion, while exports gained 11.3% to $5.4 billion. Pipeline imports declined 17.1% to $5.4 billion, while exports fell 26.6% to $632 million.
Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90% of U.S. trade among NAFTA partners moves by land.
