Nation Appears Ready for Y2K

It's time to lay the cards on the table.

Companies and agencies that have made Y2K preparations will face the moment of truth at midnight Dec. 31, and unless someone's bluffing or badly miscalculating, disruptions from computer snafus related to the much-anticipated glitch will be minimal.

Like the rest of the country, the trucking industry seems to have the matter firmly in hand. Businesses have worked furiously to prevent problems, and many trucking fleets and suppliers in computer-related fields have established means of dealing with any trouble that may arise.

The federal government said by mid-December that 99.9% of its mission-critical systems are Y2K compliant. Despite a high level of confidence, the government's chief Y2K troubleshooter, John Koskinen, warned that some systems that have been fixed and tested will experience glitches because of unforeseen complications.
