ORLANDO, Fla. — Navistar Inc. demonstrated an “open architecture” remote diagnostics system that fleets can use with any telematics provider to speed up repairs and control maintenance costs.

The manufacturer’s OnCommand Connection was shown here Oct. 20 during American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition.

It is expected to make its market debut in January and will be the only product that provides information using multiple telematics providers, said Nadine Haupt, director of powertrain product marketing at Navistar.

“With the advent of onboard diagnostics and an increase in the number of fault codes, it has become more and more difficult for customers to diagnose what is wrong,” Haupt said, noting there are 550 of those codes for engines alone.

Navistar said the action will connect fleets and dealers with drivers through the OEM’s repair advocate and technical service. OnCommand Connection also advises drivers and others about the severity of a fault code, and a mapping feature will guide drivers to the nearest dealer for repairs.

The Navistar product also will process information on engine fault codes for Volvo and Mack nameplate tractors, she said. OnCommandConnection now is being tested with eight telematics providers.

Time savings for fleets could be as much as 24 hours, said Brian Mulshine, director of field service.

Additional coverage will be included in the Oct. 28 print edition of Transport Topics.
