Navistar Inc. has announced a new fuel-efficiency package for its International ProStar model, marking the latest enhancement to the company’s lineup.

The ProStar ES, which stands for efficiency specification, will offer “industry-leading aerodynamics, a drivetrain with advanced downspeeding and the most efficient rear axles in the industry,” the company said in a statement.

Navistar, based in Lisle, Illinois, said it will begin taking orders later this month. The statement said the ES offers an 11% fuel-economy improvement compared with the baseline 2010 ProStar MaxxForce with a 13-liter engine, selective catalytic reduction technology and 10-speed manual transmission.

On a Dec. 5 webinar announcing the new spec, Navistar said the ProStar ES achieves its improved fuel economy through a “full aerodynamics package” accounting for various highway wind conditions, an optimized drivetrain that takes advantage of engine downspeeding, and support from the company’s engineering team and its remote diagnostics program.

“The ProStar ES is, by far, the highest quality and most fuel-efficient package we’ve ever offered,” said John McKinney, senior vice president for sales and marketing. “Our performance engineering team has studied, tested and validated hundreds of vehicle, powertrain and component combinations to develop an ‘optimized spec package’ that maximizes fuel efficiency and is easy to order.”

The company’s statement said the ES has the industry’s lowest wind-averaged drag coefficient.

There are two powertrain choices. One is the Eaton Cummins SmartAdvantage, including the Cummins ISX15 engine with the Eaton Fuller Advantage automated transmission. The other is Navistar’s own SCR-based 13-liter engine, also paired with the Eaton Fuller Advantage automated transmission.

With the SmartAdvantage powertrain, the ES can run at as much as 300 rpm less than competitors’ equipment, Navistar said.

ES customers also receive three years of OnCommand Connection, a communications system that enables onboard diagnostics to improve operating efficiency through real-time monitoring.

“We are confident in the performance of this vehicle,” said Jodi Presswood, vice president of the heavy-duty product line. “We have customers already running this spec today, and they say it outperforms every other truck in their fleet, including other makes.”

The new ES package represents the official rollout of the fuel-efficient ProStar spec that Navistar showcased in October at American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition in San Diego.

The ProStar ES will be available for order Dec. 15.
