Navistar Inc. has signed a long-term agreement to supply J.B. Hunt Transport Services with International brand commercial trucks through 2014.

The five-year agreement with J.B. Hunt, which has about 9,000 power units in its fleet, calls for delivery of more than 5,000 trucks, Navistar said Tuesday.

Navistar will deliver International ProStar sleepers and day cabs powered by 2010 Environmental Protection Agency-certified MaxxForce 13 big bore engines using exhaust gas recirculation technology.

Navistar is the only major diesel engine maker offering EGR instead of the selective catalytic reduction, or SCR, technology that is being offered by its competitors to meet EPA’s new standards on reducing nitrogen oxide emissions. (Click here for related story from this week’s print editiion.)

“We’re excited to once again be J.B. Hunt’s principal commercial truck provider and look forward to delivering them International trucks with MaxxForce engines as well as the full support of our parts and dealer network," said Jack Allen, president of Navistar’s North American truck group.

“J.B. Hunt is continuously evaluating equipment alternatives to ensure we leverage the best solution available for our customers, our drivers and the environment,” said Kirk Thompson, J.B. Hunt’s chief executive officer.

“Through this supplier agreement with Navistar, we will be adding some of the most fuel-efficient and driver-friendly tractors in the industry to our fleet,” he said in a statement.
