New $100 Million Truck Scale Planned on I-80 Near Port of Oakland

California state officials broke ground Friday on a truck weight scales facility on Interstate 80 in Cordelia, Calif., a move that will help trucks leaving the Port of Oakland, the Contra Costa (Calif.) Times reported.

The new $100 million facility will have greater capacity and better technology and will replace the one built in 1958, the paper said.

The current facility served as an inspection point for trucks leaving the Port of Oakland, where 99% of containerized goods begin moving through Northern California, the Times reported.

The new scales will be built a half-mile east of the existing facility, and its weigh-in-motion scales will not require trucks to come to a complete stop before being weighed, making the process more efficient, Malcolm Dougherty,  the California Department of Transportation’s acting director, told the paper.

Construction is expected to be done in June 2013, the Times reported.
