New Offer Holds Off Carhaul Strike

The Teamsters union continued talks with carhauling companies beyond the May 31 deadline after a new offer was presented by company representatives.

A strike had been scheduled for 12:01 a.m. EDT, but Teamster President James P. Hoffa said the negotiations would continue in the light of the new offer. However, Hoffa said "troubling issues" remained.

For Hoffa, who officially took office May 1, the carhaul talks represent the only national negotiation during his term as president.

On May 17, union members voted 5,705 to 251 to authorize a strike against one or all of the companies involved in the contract negotiations with the National Automobile Transporters Labor Division. The 17 companies involved in the talks hauled more than 15 million autos in 1998.
