NFI Industries will deploy 50 Class 8 battery-electric trucks (BETs) in Southern California, the for-hire truckload carrier said.
Camden, N.J.-based NFI plans to deploy and operate 30 Freightliner eCascadias and 20 Volvo VNR Electric trucks from its Ontario, Calif., warehouse as part of the company’s port drayage services, it said.
The fleet expansion is part of the Joint Electric Truck Scaling Initiative project backed by the California Air Resources Board and the California Energy Commission.
NFI took delivery of the first 15 Class 8 BETs funded through the project already, with the remainder set to be delivered by the end of June, the company said.
By the end of 2023, NFI will have 100 Class 8 BETs dedicated to port drayage, NFI CEO Sid Brown said in a statement.
NFI did not respond to requests for comment on how many BETs it currently has operating.
A total of 19 350-kW power cabinets and 38 electric vehicle chargers will be operational by the end of 2023 at the Ontario facility.
In the meantime, the company will operate its BETs from its Chino, Calif., facility, where charging infrastructure is already installed.
NFI ranks No. 16 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America, and No. 23 on the TT Top 100 logistics list. It owns more than 5,000 tractors and 14,300 trailers. — Transport Topics
