No 'Silver Bullet' for Truck Safety

PORTLAND, Ore. — Trucking, suppliers and state and federal regulators all agree that motor carrier safety is their top priority, but they disagree on the best approach to reduce accidents and fatalities. Nowhere was this more evident than last week at the annual meeting of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

“Truck safety does not lend itself to simple, easy solutions,” said Tim Lynch, president of the Motor Freight Carriers Association, which represents unionized less-than-truckload carriers. “There are no silver-bullet answers.”

That’s problematic this year, as the public, Congress and the Department of Transportation examine truck safety with an intensity that Lynch said he could not remember in his 20 years as an industry lobbyist. With more vehicles operating on overburdened highways than ever before, the public is clamoring to know their government is keeping them safe. “They want to know there’s a cop on the beat,” Lynch said.

The cops are there, but there are not enough of them, said state and federal regulators.
