Longtime Competitor Timothy Whitley Claims Grand Champion Title
The North Carolina Truck Driving Championships crowned Timothy Whitley as the Grand Champion in Raleigh on May 11.
Whitley, a driver for Old Dominion Freight Line Inc., placed first in the Straight Truck division.
Whitley has been driving for 25 years and has been with ODFL for 21 years. He has more than 500,000 accident-free miles behind him and resides in Wilson.
Michael Bills ultimately replaced Whitley as the Straight Truck division winner and will appear at the national competition. Whitley retains his Grand Chamption title.

2019 Preview
When: May 9-11, 2019
Where: Raleigh, N.C.
Field: 161 truck drivers are expected to compete in nine categories.
Preview: The Tar Heel State is set to test its top drivers at the North Carolina Truck Driving Championships hosted by the North Carolina Trucking Association. The competition will be held May 9-11 at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.
Cochran described the competition as the “Super Bowl of Safety” and said that the requirement that competitors must be accident-free for at least one year prior to the tournament motivates drivers.

Former Grand Champions Battle Longtime Competitors at NTDC
Bills
Michael Bills of FedEx Express had the honor of hoisting up his Grand Champion trophy after his winning performance in the Straight Truck division at the North Carolina Truck Driving Championships.
Bills has more than 1 million safe driving miles under his belt and more than 25 years behind the wheel as a driver.
At the 2018 National Truck Driving Championships, Bills represented his home state in the Straight Truck division. He came in second in that category, bested only by Kentucky's Dale Brenaman.
Larry Wilson of Food Lion/DelHaize America, North Carolina's top 4-Axle competitor, also had an impressive showing at the national competition, finishing No. 6.
