2019 Recap
Past 3-Axle National Champ Heladio Fernandez Earns First Oregon Grand Champion Honor
FedEx Freight driver Heladio “Lalo” Fernandez has a national title to his name — 2010 3-Axle champion — and four Oregon state titles but had never been named the state’s Grand Champion. That changed June 8.
Fernandez
Fernandez, who has been with the Memphis, Tenn.-based company for 13 years, claimed his first Grand Champion honor at Oregon’s trucking event, which was held in Portland. He won first place in the Tank Truck division, and now with five state titles and an upcoming fifth appearance at the National Truck Driving Championships, he’s been recognized as a FedEx Ace to boot.
“It was a great honor [to be named Grand Champion], and I feel like I had finally achieved something to show for everyone who has been so supportive of me — my wife, my family, my Portland team and Portland management,” Fernandez said.

Outen
Keeping Others Safe is the Only Victory Oregon’s Outen Needs
Distracted drivers were responsible for the deaths of 3,450 people on U.S. highways in 2016, according the the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Distracted driving is an issue that hits close to home for Chris Outen of FedEx Freight.
When Outen was just 12 years old, he lost his father to a car accident. Now 56, Outen preaches safe driving every day whether he’s on the road, advocating for the industry as an America’s Road Team captain, or competing at a truck driving championship.
He’ll be taking that message to the national stage for the ninth time after winning the sleeper berth class and Grand Champion honors at the Oregon Truck Driving Championships on June 16.
