Maintenance and custodial workers from the Service Employees International Union were set to return to work Wednesday after a one-day strike at the Port of Oakland, Calif., The Associated Press reported.

Strikers blocked trucks from picking up and delivering goods and caused “major issues in terms of blockages,” AP reported.

Dozens of drivers decided not to interrupt the protest, and the AP reported a port spokesman said that it was unfortunate that truckers were forced to stop work and wait in the rain.

The protest was over stalled contract talks between the SEIU Local 1021 and port officials concerning pay, benefits and a demand by the port that workers contribute to their retirement fund.
