President Obama has named Chuck Hurley, the head of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, to lead the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the White House said on its Web site.
Hurley has been led MADD since 2005 and held senior leadership positions with the National Safety Council and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety over the last thirty years.
In addition to his work on drunk driving issues, Hurley worked extensively with law enforcement on air bag and seat belt issues, teen driving, and child passenger safety.
He was worked with then State Senator Obama in 2003 to strengthen Illinois' seat belt, teen driving, child passenger safety, and racial profiling laws in Illinois.
Prior to his career in highway safety, Hurley worked for in various political posts and was a naval intelligence officer.
