President Obama will nominate Deborah Hersman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, to be the board's chairman, the White House said.
Since joining the board in June 2004, Hersman has served as its representative at 15 accidents, the White House said in a statement Tuesday.
She has chaired public events on issues such as motorcycle and motor coach safety, and holds a commercial drivers license.
Prior to NTSB, Hersman worked as a staff member with the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, the White House said.
The five-member NTSB is an independent agency charged with investigating transportation accidents.
Hersman’s nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
