The Ohio Turnpike has joined the E-ZPass toll collection system. Until Oct. 1, when the turnpike opened its new E-ZPass lanes, the roadway had no electronic tolling system and only accepted cash payments.
Opened in 1955, the turnpike is one of the nation’s oldest toll roads and at 241 miles is one of the longest.
At the same time it opened its E-ZPass lanes, however, the turnpike began collecting higher tolls based on truck axles rather than the previous system of charging according to truck weight.
Under the new toll rates, a truck with five axles, for example, will pay $32 to run the length of the turnpike if the truck has E-ZPass.
Without E-ZPass, the same truck on the same trip must pay $40.
