Old Dominion Freight Line Opens Pennsylvania Terminal
Old Dominion Freight Line has called the Lehigh Valley home for 22 years, a fact made possible by the region’s ambitious local workforce, the company’s regional vice president said June 20 during a ceremony to celebrate the opening of the freight hauler’s new truck terminal in Bethlehem Township, Pa.
“So we couldn’t be in a better place,” said Bob Foote.
Actually, the “place” wasn’t Old Dominion’s first choice. Dan Lamancusa, the facility’s sales and service manager, said the company picked the 8½-acre, former industrial site after plans for a facility in Upper Macungie Township fell through when residents questioned the facility. It also led to a court showdown among Upper Macungie officials over the definition of trucks.
Old Dominion Freight Line ranks No. 11 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
“We wanted the Upper Macungie property because it was more centrally located to our service area,” Lamancusa said during a brief interview after the ceremony. But the new building, at 2535 Brodhead Road, is between routes 191, 512 and 22, which puts it in close proximity to the interstates, he said.
Old Dominion’s event included tours of the 48,500-square-foot facility. It includes long aisles to store freight and 75 doors where inventory is loaded into trailers. The facility also features a dispatch room, where managers keep track of drivers’ deliveries and routes on color-coordinated computer maps.
