Ontario, Quebec Reach Size-Weight Agreement

Ontario and Quebec have agreed to harmonize the weights and dimensions for several tractor-trailer combinations that commonly operate between the two provinces.

The Aug. 30 agreement, signed by Ontario Transportation Minister David Turnbull and Quebec Transportation Minister Guy Chevrette, ends seven years of negotiations involving both governments and trucking associations from both provinces.

Ontario, however, still has some legislative hurdles to clear before the targeted implementation date of Jan. 1, 2001.

In addition to specifying tractor and trailer sizes and weights, the agreement establishes a system of permits to be used for 10 years from the implementation date.
