Oregon Promotes Norpass With Free Transponders

Oregon plans a giveaway to encourage truckers to use a device that will allow them to drive past weigh stations without waiting in line.

In conjunction with the North American Pre-clearance and Safety System, a state Department of Transportation project will offer a free six-month trial and then a 50% discount on transponders, which transmit credential data and allow vehicles to bypass weigh stations.

The devices have the added benefit of helping to reduce the number of safety and credential inspections for motor carriers that have demonstrated continued compliance with regulations, according Transcore, which administers Norpass under its Green Light program.

The state is giving away 4,500 transponders for a six-month evaluation to companies and owner-operators enrolling in the program. The special price will be available until March 1 or until all the devices are distributed.
