Overnite, Teamsters Meet Again

Overnite Transportation and the Teamsters met again March 23-24, this time in Kansas City, Mo., even as the union announced plans to step up its strike campaign and the company boasted of improved services and profits.

The union said it will start a media campaign and lobby Congress, asking it to review the labor practices of the Richmond, Va.-based less-than-truckload carrier.

Teamster spokesman David Cameron said the union’s preliminary plan was to run advertisements on 1,600 radio stations in 26 cities, on television in several markets and in several print publications. The campaign will cost less than $1 million, officials said.

Overnite spokesman Ira Rosenfeld was skeptical about whether the campaign will see the light of day, saying the union was spread thin because it is in the midst of a campaign to woo truck drivers who provide drayage services at ports.
