Overnite, Union Continue To Dispute Strike’s Effect

The Teamsters union and Overnite Transportation continued to give widely disparate accounts of the effect the union’s picketing is having on the company’s business, as the strike neared the end of its second week.

Overnite said Nov. 4 that freight volume is down only 6 percentage points, while the union said 38% was closer to reality.

The Teamsters strike began on Oct. 24, starting at Overnite’s Memphis, Tenn., facility and spreading to others in the ensuing days.

The union said Nov. 3 that more than 2,000 Overnite workers at 133 of the company’s 166 terminals are involved in the strike. The company, in its most recent press release, said that all of its facilities are meeting delivery and pickup schedules with few exceptions and that roughly 93% of its employees are reporting to work despite the picketing.
