Overnite, Union Split on Mediation

In an effort to avoid a Teamsters union strike of Overnite Transportation Co., the federal labor mediation board volunteered Sept. 17 to help the two sides reach an agreement.

The Teamsters accepted the offer; Overnite declined it.

The overture came a day after the union’s freight director sent a letter to Overnite customers telling them to get ready for an imminent strike of the 21 terminals the Teamsters represent.
