Peterbilt Motors Co. temporarily closed its truck plant in Madison, Tenn., which had been idled for 10 months due to a work stoppage over stalled union contract negotiations, the Associated Press reported.

The Denton, Texas-based Paccar Inc. unit has failed to reach a contract with the United Auto Workers and the facility has not been producing trucks since last June, AP said.

Peterbilt has made the decision to temporarily close its Nashville plant due to the challenging economy, and looks forward to reopening our facility when conditions improve.

The Tennessee Department of Labor said Monday that 390 employees were being laid off, and a Peterbilt official said most of those employees had not worked at the plant since June, AP reported.

The official told AP that Peterbilt decided to close the plant because of the lagging economy and reduced demand, but said the plant could reopen if the market improves.
