Peterbilt Unveils New Class 8, Medium-Duty Models

Peterbilt Motors Co. recently introduced its new Model 587 Class 8 truck, available as a day cab or a twin sleeper, replacing its Model 387.

The Model 587 features the 2010 Paccar MX engine, rated at 380 to 485 horsepower, or the 2010 Cummins ISX15, available with a horsepower range of 400 to 600.

Automatic transmissions are available with axle ratings up to 46,000 lbs., Peterbilt said at the Mid-America Trucking Show late last month in Louisville, Ky.

Peterbilt Chief Engineer Landon Sproull said the truck will offer air disc brakes on the steer axle as a standard feature.

Like its sister company Kenworth Truck Co.’s new T700 tractor, the Model 587 is EPA SmartWay certified, under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s partnership with freight transporters formed to help reduce emissions.

At MATS, Peterbilt also showed off two new all-wheel drive medium-duty trucks, the Model 337 in Class 7 and Model 348 in Class 5.
