A $25 million grant given to the Port of Houston Authority will go toward the development of a hydrogen refilling station in Bayport.

The U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration awarded the money in early January to one of the largest ports in Houston for the construction of the Bayport Hydrogen Refueling Station as a part of a public-private collaboration, according to the news release. The station will provide public, pipeline-based fueling options for trucks and propel supply chain growth across Texas and the Gulf Coast region.

Chemical company Linde PLC will oversee the design and construction, and operate the Bayport HRS. Additional partners include GTI Energy, Argonne National Laboratory and Center for Houston’s Future.

“As one of the channel’s leading advocates, Port Houston is committed to fostering sustainability, resilience, collaboration and quality of life for the community and nation we serve,” said Charlie Jenkins, CEO of Port Houston, in a statement.

The goal of the collaboration is to support the U.S. National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization, the National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy and the U.S. National Clean H2 Strategy and Roadmap, according to the release.

Kristine Wiley, vice president of low-carbon energy solutions at GTI Energy, said hydrogen has the potential to “reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors like heavy-duty trucking.” She said that the project will leverage the Houston area’s energy resources.

“Linde welcomes the opportunity to work with Port of Houston to develop key hydrogen infrastructure and support the future decarbonization of heavy transport in Texas,” said Richard Minter, president of hydrogen mobility at Linde.

Managing Director Brett Perlman, who has been focusing on the clean hydrogen industry in Houston, said the Center for Houston is excited to be a part of building a clean hydrogen transportation network.

“The Houston/Gulf Coast’s regional clean hydrogen economy continues to gain momentum, including with announcements such as this,” he said in a statement. “This is also another great example of collaboration among business, government and community to get things done.”

The project comes after Houston’s initiatives involving clean hydrogen. In 2023, the HyVelocity Hub was one of seven hydrogen hubs to be selected for up to $1.2 billion in federal funding.

Port Houston obtained $57 million in grants for the “port’s sustainability plan to lead, partner with others or support to produce tangible results,” according to the release.
