The Port of Virginia reported it handled record volume of more than 2.3 million 20-foot equivalent units in 2014, up 7.6% over the previous year, but cited “challenges” for truckers that serve the port.

“The growth is significant, but it has created significant challenges as well, especially in service levels for our motor carriers,” said John Reinhart, the Virginia Port Authority’s CEO and executive director.

“The growth is a tribute to our team and our port partners, but our enthusiasm is tempered, as we are cognizant of the fact that we have much work to do on building infrastructure and developing processes to maintain the business and grow the port,” he said.

December volume was just over 203,000 TEUs, a year-over-year jump of 12.3% and the eighth month of 2014 that TEU volumes topped 200,000 units.

For the calendar year, truck container traffic rose 9.1% to about 868,000 TEUs, rail levels rose 4% to 448,000 and barge traffic gained 18.4% to 57,000.

The port will release December financial results at its Jan. 27 meeting. December is the halfway mark of its 2015 fiscal year.
