Qualcomm’s Third-Quarter Earnings Slip

Wireless-services provider Qualcomm Inc. said its fiscal third-quarter earnings slipped to $737 million, or 44 cents a share, from $748 million, or 45 cents, a year ago.

Revenue fell slightly $2.75 billion for the quarter ended June 29, down from $2.76 billion the previous year, Qualcomm said late Wednesday.

The Qualcomm Wireless & Internet unit saw its revenue fall to $148 million, from $190 a year ago, the company said in a filing. The decrease was due in part to a $17 million decline in revenue from Qualcomm Enterprise Services, the truck telematics unit of QWI.

Qualcomm said that the QES revenue decrease was primarily attributable to a $9 million decrease in revenue from hardware sales and a $6 million decrease in messaging revenues. QES hardware sold 7,000 fewer units than last year, or a 39% decrease.

In addition, QES’s operating revenues improved slightly from the year before due to cost cutting measures, Qualcomm said.

Qualcomm makes computer applications for the trucking industry, including communications and trailer-tracking systems.
