Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) will be the next chairman of the House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, the full committee’s chairman announced Nov. 20.
Diaz-Balart will succeed Rep. Tom Latham (R-Iowa) in the 114th Congress, which convenes in January. Latham is retiring after this year.
The six-term lawmaker from the Miami district said he will “prioritize transportation initiatives that will improve our local communities.”
“I will work tirelessly to uphold the high standards established by former subcommittee chairmen, including the Honorable Tom Latham and our very own South Floridian, the Honorable Bill Lehman,” he added.
House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) said Diaz-Balart and the other subcommittee chairmen in the next Congress will “lead the way in overseeing our federal agencies and guide spending decisions to make the most responsible and effective use of American tax dollars.”
The transportation panel is tasked with allocating funds for programs at the Department of Transportation and its agencies, such as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
