Roadway Express Earns Excellence Award For Efforts to Reduce Pollution

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Instead of dumping damaged containers of paint, wood stain and related products, and thus having the otherwise useful goods end up as hazardous waste in a landfill, employees of Roadway Express donated the items to charity.

This simple action by workers at Roadway’s terminal in Carlisle, Pa., reduced the facility’s hazardous waste disposal by 75%.

Another program implemented throughout the Roadway organization involved giving slightly damaged goods to nonprofit groups, such as Habitat for Humanity and United Way. In the program’s first three months, 6,000 pounds of materials that would have been disposed of as hazardous waste were donated.

For these earth-conscious efforts, a group of six Roadway employees were picked from five company finalists to receive the Environmental Excellence in Trucking award. Larry Aiello, Leona Bowser, Terry Dagen, Lori Leonti, Dennis McMickens and Doug Motter took home the honor.
