Roehl Transport said it will install drag-reducing aerodynamic “tails,” supplied by ATDynamics Inc., on 500 trailers.
The TrailerTails will offset the fuel consumption and carbon emissions equivalent to taking about 500 passenger vehicles off the road, according to Roehl.
The carrier began testing the tails in 2012 by installing the devices on 100 trailers.
“Roehl’s on-road testing confirmed the fuel savings benefit and durability of TrailerTail technology. Drivers understand that in addition to saving fuel, aerodynamic trailers are safer, handle better in high winds and reduce dangerous road spray,” Roehl Transport President Rick Roehl said in a statement.
ATDynamics projects 50,000 TrailerTails will be on the road by 2014, based on current fleet demand.
With more than 1,800 tractors and 5,000 trailers, Roehl Transport is ranked No. 68 on the Transport Topics Top 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
