Ruan Transportation Management Systems has promoted Ben McLean to CEO from chief operating officer, succeeding Steve Chapman.

McLean, a third generation Ruan family member, will report to Executive Chairman John Ruan III.

Chapman is retiring effective Dec. 31. He was appointed CEO when John Ruan began a term as chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce board of directors five years ago, according to the company.

“The last two years, my focus has been on mentoring Ben McLean to lead the company. As I transition this role over to Ben, I’m so proud of all that we’ve accomplished, and Mr. Ruan and I are confident the company is in good hands and positioned extremely well for the future,” Chapman said in a statement.

Des Moines, Iowa-based Ruan has 5,200 employees in 260 operations across the United States. It ranks No. 38 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

“It’s been an honor working alongside Ruan team members from the professional drivers to the talented leadership team and, of course, the Ruan family,” Chapman said.
