North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and other state officials announced a $13.7 million expansion by RXO in its Ballantyne operations to add 216 jobs over the coming years.

“It’s great to see another North Carolina company decide that our state remains the perfect location to grow and thrive,” Cooper noted. “RXO’s decision demonstrates the strength and competitive advantages of North Carolina’s infrastructure, business climate and highly skilled workforce.”

Based in Charlotte, N.C., RXO’s expansion in Mecklenburg County will enable it to handle growth in demand, while providing new opportunities for transportation brokers, operational and logistics specialists, and technology and data analysts.

RXO ranks No. 20 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest logistics companies in North America. After finalizing its acquisition of Coyote Logistics in September, RXO is likely the third-largest freight broker by gross revenue in North America.

“RXO’s expansion is a victory for both the company and our residents,” said George Dunlap, chair of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners. “One of our core commitments is creating and maintaining a pro-business climate that keeps companies such as RXO competitive and growing in Mecklenburg County.”

RXO is an independent, publicly owned company that focuses on tech-enabled brokered transportation. It was established in 2022 as a spinoff of XPO’s freight brokerage arm. XPO, now a pure-play less-than-truckload carrier, ranks No. 5 on the TT100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America.

“North Carolina’s strategic location, robust infrastructure and skilled talent pool make it a vital hub for the transportation industry, and we’re proud to be a part of its continued growth,” noted Drew Wilkerson, CEO.

The North Carolina Department of Commerce led the state’s effort to work with RXO during its site evaluation and decision-making process.

“Following an extensive and rigorous site evaluation process, I’m proud that RXO selected North Carolina for this expansion project,” Machelle Baker Sanders, state commerce secretary, noted. “Success in economic development requires teamwork and the willingness to invest in the things that keep us competitive, like our education and workforce training systems. We will always do what it takes to keep North Carolina a top business location.”

Assisting in the expansion were other government bodies such as the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, the state General Assembly and the North Carolina Community College System. Support was also given by the state Workforce Solutions Division, Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said, “This is not just an expansion; it’s a significant milestone for our city’s growth and economic development. This investment will create jobs, drive innovation, and enhance our community’s prosperity.”

The average salary for the new positions will be $89,769, up 6% over today’s average wage in Mecklenburg County. RXO’s addition of 216 jobs is expected to have an annual economic impact of $19 million.

RXO currently has 759 full-time employees in North Carolina. The new positions would be created in Charlotte during the coming three years.

“New jobs and new investment are on the way to Charlotte, and I couldn’t be more excited,” said state Sen. Rachel Hunt (D). “RXO has been a great partner in our community, and we’re thrilled they’ve chosen to expand here in Mecklenburg County.”

State Rep. Wesley Harris (D) said the state is behind RXO in its growth endeavors. “It’s great to see the close collaboration from many local, regional and state organizations that have worked tirelessly to bring this economic development project to Charlotte. We are thrilled to see such a great company make such a strong investment in our community. We look forward to supporting the company through this next stage of their growth in North Carolina,” Harris said.
