Truck leasing and rental provider Ryder System Inc. said it is upgrading its North American rental fleet with more than 1,000 trucks equipped with automated manual transmissions.
The automated transmissions help customers improve fuel economy while enhancing the driver experience with smoother gear shifts, advanced safety features and a variety of driving modes for different terrains and applications, Ryder said.
“With this investment in automatic transmission vehicles, we are helping customers address critical business priorities — fleet efficiency, driver retention and recruiting,” said Richard Mohr, vice president and global product manager for Ryder’s rental operations.
Ryder told Transport Topics that the new trucks feature a mix of Detroit DT12, Eaton UltraShift and Volvo I-Shift automated transmissions.
Ryder Commercial Rental provides rental trucks on a short-term basis to help customers meet their needs for supplemental capacity.
The company operates more than 500 rental locations across the U.S. and Canada stocked with over 32,000 recent-model vehicles.
Ryder’s Supply Chain Solutions business ranks No. 11 on Transport Topics’ TT100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada.
