Ryder to Sell Clean Energy Fuels’ Renewable Natural Gas
Ryder System Inc. said it would switch to renewable natural gas from fossil natural gas at its fueling stations in Orange and Fontana, California.
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. will supply the truck-leasing and logistics company with its Redeem brand of fuel, which is derived from the methane gas that decomposing waste emits.
Both stations will sell compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas to individual and fleet vehicles, the companies said in a release.
Ryder said its leased heavy-duty, natural-gas trucks have accumulated more than 40 million miles of experience, it offers natural-gas vehicle maintenance in 18 markets and has more than 4,000 natural gas-vehicle-trained personnel.
“Our decision to use 100% renewable natural gas is based upon our ongoing commitment to ensuring we are delivering solutions that help our customers reduce greenhouse-gas emissions,” Scott Perry, Ryder’s vice president of supply management and global fuel products, said in a statement. “With Redeem, we achieve that with a 100% renewable fuel.”
“After launching Redeem as a commercial fuel just two short years ago, Clean Energy is on track to deliver over 40 million gallons this year,” said Harrison Clay, president of Clean Energy renewables.
Newport Beach, California-based Clean Energy said it procures the renewable vehicle fuel from more than 15 biomethane production facilities, including two it owns and operates.
With the new fuel, Miami-based Ryder said it expects to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by about 6,300 metric tons per year using current fuel volumes. That is the equivalent of removing about 1,319 passenger cars from the road annually.
Ryder System is the parent company of Ryder Supply Chain Solutions, which ranks No. 13 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada.
As part of the fuel agreement, Clean Energy will provide fuel-station maintenance services at the two locations.
