ORLANDO, Fla.— SAF-Holland Group announced it began market and product development of trailer electric axles on real-world applications for the North American market.
The company’s TRAKr electric axle technology aims to enhance the user experience for drivers, as well as offer service-friendly applications and flexibility, per SAF-Holland Group executives at the Technology & Maintenance Council 2022 Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition.
The company emphasized the technology continues to undergo testing. Prototypes in the North American market are possible by the end of the year.

“The initial feedback from the drivers and fleet managers in Europe has been very positive, and there is an increase in demand for equipping more test vehicles with the electric axles,” said Mike Ginocchio, vice president of Engineering-Americas at SAF-Holland Inc.
A specific use for the TRAKr e-axle would be refrigerated transport fleets. For this, trailer refrigeration units would be capable of operating fully electric. Such operations would reduce noise, assist with meeting zero-emission standards, and help to extend the service life of trailer refrigeration units. The technology would be available for SAF mechanical and air suspension tandem axle slider systems for refrigerated trailers.
Ginocchio continued, “These test vehicles, which are currently on the road in real-life situations, are supporting our TRAKr North American launch progress by supplying us with important information regarding the use and application profile as we continue development.”
