Samsara is teaming up with Northland Insurance to offer the latter’s customers a discount on their premiums or subsidies for investments, the in-cab technology provider said, becoming the fourth telematics vendor to do so.

Customers who participate in the Northland Insurance Telematics Partner Program can receive a subsidy of up to $300 annually per vehicle for a Samsara AI Dash Cam purchase, or a 10% insurance premium discount.

The offer comes at a time when, according to American Transportation Research Institute, “average to marginal” motor carriers are seeing premium hikes of 35-40%. ATRI is the nonprofit research arm of American Trucking Associations.

Northland, in turn, will receive data from trucks with the Samsara telematics sensors and use it to research and analyze risk correlations.

Samsara and Northland say the partnership will help improve safety, including through fleet managers receiving real-time driver alerts on speeding and drowsiness.

Distracted driving was No. 10 on ATRI’s list of the top industry concerns in 2024.

“Fleet managers who utilize Samsara to inform their driver training programs help to reduce risk and create safer highways for everyone. When used effectively, Samsara telematic and video data can help identify drivers who are at higher risk and more likely to cause accidents,” said Northland Insurance President Donato Monaco. “Our premium discount and device subsidy programs recognize the investments those operators make in risk management to improve safety.”

St. Paul, Minn.-based Northland Insurance, part of the larger The Travelers Cos. group, offers insurance coverage for owner-operators and fleets.

Customers of Northland already were able to participate in the program when using telematics specialists Azuga, Motive and Netradyne.

All new and existing customers with a Northland policy that includes Primary Auto Liability are eligible. The program is for Class 7 or 8 heavy- and extra-heavy trucks and tractors. Light and Medium trucks are excluded from participation.

Terms of the discount program require:

• Accounts with between one and 10 power units to have the telematic devices and/or cameras installed on all units to be eligible.

• On accounts with 11 or more power units, at least 75% of the trucks must have telematic devices and/or cameras installed to be eligible.

The program launched in August 2023.

At the same time, the company launched a cargo theft reporting feature for its policies that expedites the claim process. It enables users to report thefts directly from a mobile app to the Northland claim team and Travelers’ Special Investigation Group.

A rise in cargo theft correlates with the increase in premiums.

The Transportation Intermediaries Association’s State of Fraud in the Industry 2024 Report showed cargo theft soared 600% between November 2022 and March 2023.

Northland claims to be the largest wholesale trucking insurance company in the U.S. It has more than 22,000 customers across 46 states.
